A Living Boonwurrung Cultural Ecosystem

Boonwurrung Country stretches from the Werribee River through Melbourne, along the shores of Port Phillip Bay and Western Port, to Wilsons Promontory. Today, this Country encompasses all or part of approximately 26 local government areas, where more than three million people live, work, play, learn and gather on Boonwurrung Country.

For thousands of years, Boonwurrung people have cared for this Country through deep systems of knowledge, language, law and relationship. That knowledge continues today through Elders, educators, artists, language practitioners, cultural consultants, ceremony leaders, performers and community organisations who each carry unique responsibilities and expertise.

One of the questions we are asked most often at Biik Bundjil is:

“Who should we connect with for Boonwurrung cultural knowledge, language, Welcome to Country, education, artists or cultural experiences?”

The answer has never been just one person or one organisation.

Like all living cultures, Boonwurrung knowledge is held collectively. Every practitioner contributes in different ways, bringing their own lived experience, cultural responsibilities and areas of expertise. Together, they form a living cultural ecosystem across Boonwurrung Country.

This resource has been created to help schools, councils, businesses, government departments, community organisations and individuals connect directly with Boonwurrung practitioners and services.
